Stop Separating Families – A Call To Action From Local 343’s PAC

Sisters, Brothers and Comrades,

Attached to this post is a form letter we’re providing to members to send to their local MP’s as well as a link to our petition to Prime Minister Trudeau urging our Canadian Government to suspend the Safe Third Country Agreement.

The letter is in response to the unnerving images that have come out of the US’ Southern Border policy of family separation and child detention. While there has been some movement on these issues we believe our Local can raise it’s collective voice and implore our own elected officials to do more to help.

To that end the letter drafted below asked MPs to raise their voice and suspend the ‘Safe Third Country’ Agreement. This Agreement states that both the US and Canada are safe third countries for those fleeing their homes and that if they enter the US first they must apply for aslyum there. Given that between April and May alone more than 2000 children were detained and seperated from their parents, we believe they no longer fit this definition.

Our letter asks MPs to recognize this and suspend this agreement. Furthermore, it also asks them to stop the process when it occurs here in Canada.
