ABOUT US

Picture
The Canadian Office and Professional Employees Union Local 343 has a long history of representing its membership through collective bargaining, grievances, arbitrations and other legal proceedings.

Stirred by the growth of the labour movement in the 1920’s, office employees, many of whom worked for other Labour Unions, struggled to form a Union dedicated to the representation of office, clerical, technical and professional employees.  Local 343 obtained their Charter in September 1956 to the Office and Professional Employees Union.

After separating from the Office and Professional Employees International Union (OPEIU), the Canadian Office and Professional Employees Union was formed.  The Founding Convention in Québec in 2004 established a dynamic and very Canadian Union that has been in operation for nearly 50 years prior to the restructuring.

COPE Local 343 consists of 1600 members and 105 collective agreements across Canada and is part of this dynamic and growing organization.  COPE Local 343 is and autonomous local and the largest COPE Local in Ontario.  Our structure allows for Local 343 members to have a voice by attending General Council twice per year and Convention every two years.

We are a Local that upholds and recognizes Human Rights and Womens’ issues where all members have access to representation in a democratic and equitable way.

Bargaining units of 10 or more people function on their own and depending on their size can have a committee of their own that represents their members at General Council.

For further information on bargaining unit committees and delegates, please refer to the Local 343 Constitution, Article 11 Section 11.12 - Council Elections.
